George Pipgras was a little wild on the mound for the 1927 New York Yankees, but he limited the 1970 Baltimore Orioles to five hits on the way to a 5-1 victory.
Pipgras (13-8) went the distance with three strikeouts, while walking six as the New York defense helped out with three double plays.
The only real blemish on the day for Pipgras was a solo homer in the top of the ninth by Baltimore slugger Boog Powell.
Baltimore starter Tom Phoebus blanked the Yankees until the bottom of the fourth when he lost some control. Phoebus walked Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig to begin the frame before Tony Lazzeri was retired.
Ben Paschal, who was getting a rare start in left field, doubled and Ruth raced home to make it 1-0.
New York added two more runs in the fifth.
After Phoebus walked the bases loaded with one down, he got Gehrig to pop out. However, Lazerri smacked a double and put the Yankees in front 3-0.
Pete Richert took over for Phoebus and he allowed two more runs to score.
Ruth hit a solo shot in the seventh for his 49th long ball of the season as he drove in his 117th run. Earle Combs capped the scoring in the eighth with a RBI single.
Waite Hoyt (18-5) will start for the Yankees in the second contest of the four-game series as Orioles manager Earl Weaver counters with Jim Palmer.
