A big sixth inning proved to be the difference as the 1927 New York Yankees defeated the 1948 Cleveland Indians 9-3.
With the win, the Yankees claimed the four-game set with a 3-1 edge and as a result the second series ended in a 11-11 tie between the two squads.
New York trailed 2-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth against Cleveland starter Bob Feller. The Yankees would oust Feller on the way to scoring six times to take the lead for good.
Feller had retired the first 15 batters before Joe Dugan and Johnny Grabowski began the frame with singles. New York starting pitcher Herb Pennock followed with a sacrifice fly to score Dugan who had raced to third on Grabowski’s hit.
Earle Combs tied the affair with a RBI triple and Mark Koenig walked to put two runners on base as Babe Ruth strolled to the plate.
Ruth drilled a three-run blast that was his 55th homer of the season raising his RBI total to 128.
Don Black took over on the mound for the Indians, but the Yankees we not quite done scoring.
Lou Gehrig singled and went to second on an error by Allie Clark in right field. Tony Lazzeri tripled and the Yankees led 6-2.
Cleveland’s final tally came in the eighth as Lou Boudreau doubled and scored when Ken Keltner reached on a two-base error by Dugan to cut the Indians deficit to three.
In the eighth, the Yankees added three more runs against Steve Gromek and Ed Klieman.
Pennock had a RBI single that was followed by a two-run double from Combs.
In going the distance for the Yankees, Pennock (9-12) gave up nine hits, walked two and fanned four.
The Yankees welcome the 2005 Chicago White Sox to Yankee Stadium for a five-game series for the final contests of the season between the two clubs.
Urban Shocker (17-4) starts the opener for New York, while the White Sox counter with Jon Garland.
