A pair of homers highlighted a big inning for the 1961 New York Yankees in a 5-1 victory over the 1968 Detroit Tigers.
The Yankees broke open the scoreless affair with all five of their runs in the sixth coming off Detroit starter Mickey Lolich, who would give up seven hits with six strikeouts in six frames.
All of the action began as Clete Boyer singled and Roger Maris homered for the 55th time this season giving the Yankees a 2-0 advantage.
Mickey Mantle and Elston Howard had back-to-back singles that would be followed by a three-run blast by Bill Skowron as the first baseman collected his 24th long ball of the year.
Dick McAuliffe knocked in Detroit’s run in the seventh with a single.
With the complete game victory, Ralph Terry was able to even his season mark at 10-10. He surrendered 10 hits and walked two, while fanning four.
Detroit reliever Daryl Patterson blanked the Yankees on three hits in the seventh and eighth innings.
New York’s Rollie Sheldon (10-10) makes his last start of the season in the finale of the four-game series with the Tigers, who will have Joe Sparma on the mound.
