George Pipgras went the distance as the 1927 New York Yankees defeated the 1972 Oakland A’s 7-1.
Pipgras scattered seven hits with four strikeouts as he worked out of a few jams early in the affair until his teammates got the offense rolling.
There was some concern from the New York faithful in Yankee Stadium as the A’s grabbed an early lead with a run in the second inning. Angel Mangual doubled and then scored on a single by Tim Cullen.
The scored remained the same until the bottom of the sixth when Babe Ruth drilled a solo homer off Oakland starter Dave Hamilton for his fifth of the season.
In the seventh, the Yankees got to Hamilton again to take a 2-1 lead. Pat Collins walked to begin the rally and he went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Pipgras. Earle Combs came through for the Yankees with a single that brought Collins home.
Hamilton’s day would come to an end in the eighth as he surrendered a single to Lou Gehrig and then a double to Bob Meusel to start the frame.
Darold Knowles was summoned to the mound by A’s manager Dick Williams. Unfortunately, for the A’s, it wouldn’t work out.
Tony Lazzeri greeted Knowles with a three-run bomb that put the Yankees in front 5-1. After retiring Joe Dugan on a fly ball, Knowles was sent to the showers as Collins and Pipgras singled.
Bob Locker got the call from the A’s bullpen and he fanned Combs, but then he got in trouble as Mark Koenig had an infield single to load the bases for Ruth.
Ruth smacked a double to drive in two more runs as the Yankees built an insurmountable lead.
Gehrig led the Yankees with three hits, while Mangual and Cullen both had two hits to top the A’s.
The Yankees visit the 1924 Washington Senators for a four-game series in Griffith Stadium.
Both teams will have aces starting on the mound as Waite Hoyt gets the ball for the Yankees and Walter Johnson goes for the Senators.
