Wilcy Moore tossed a two-hitter to lead the 1927 New York Yankees to a 5-1 victory over the 1968 Detroit Tigers to complete a four-sweep.
In his final start of the season, Moore (18-9) surrendered a solo homer to Norm Cash in the fifth inning after walking Jim Northrup in the second.
Detroit’s other hit was a single by Willie Horton in the seventh and he was erased when Cash hit into a double play. Moore fanned four batters.
The Yankees scored four times in the first inning to grab an early lead against Detroit starter Joe Sparma, who went eight innings allowing eight hits with six walks and six strikeouts.
Babe Ruth drilled his 59th homer of the season to drive in a pair of runs giving him 135 RBI.
Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri had back-to-back doubles to make it 3-0. Lazzeri came home on a single by Bob Meusel.
Lazzeri’s sacrifice fly in the seventh produced the final tally of the affair.
With the four straight wins over the Tigers, the Yankees were able to tie the season series with Detroit at 11-11.
The Yankees entertain the 1972 Oakland A’s for a makeup contest from earlier in the season.
Waite Hoyt (18-8) gets the start for New York, while Oakland counters with Catfish Hunter.
