The 60th homer of the season by Babe Ruth turned into a walk-off moment as the 1927 New York Yankees won 4-3 over the 1972 Oakland A’s.
Trailing by a run heading into the bottom of the ninth against Oakland starter Catfish Hunter, Mark Koenig led off with a single before Ruth’s blast won it.
With the victory, the Yankees end the season series against the A’s with a 15-7 record.
In his eight innings, Hunter allowed three hits with four walks and five strikeouts.
Bob Meusel drilled a two-run homer in the fifth for New York’s first hit off Hunter.
New York starter Waite Hoyt tossed eight innings and didn’t allow a run until his final frame when the A’s scored three times.
Joe Rudi doubled to begin the rally and then scored on a single by Sal Bando. Mike Epstein smacked a two-run homer and the A’s had a 3-2 lead.
Hoyt gave up eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Dutch Ruether (5-9) picked up the win as he worked a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts.
In the final series of the season, the Yankees entertain the 1924 Washington Senators for three games.
Herb Pennock (10-12) is slated to start the opener for New York with George Mogridge getting the ball for the Senators.
