Opportunity knocked and Earle Combs answered with a walk-off single that gave the 1927 New York Yankees a 6-5 victory over the 1924 Washington Senators.
Paul Zahniser retired Tony Lazzeri to begin the frame before Bob Meusel singled.
After Zahniser fanned Joe Dugan, Johnny Grabowski singled to put some pressure on the Washington pitcher.
With the New York’s bench empty thanks to a need for pinch-hitters, Yankees manager Miller Huggins was forced to use Wilcy Moore at the plate.
Moore, who pitched the top of the ninth, coaxed a walk from Zahniser that loaded the bases for Combs.
Washington player-manager Bucky Harris called Curly Ogden from the bullpen to face Combs, who delivered the game-winner.
With a perfect ninth, Moore (19-9) picked up the win for the Yankees.
Herb Pennock started for the Yankees and left the game with one out in the fourth after allowing five runs on seven hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
Myles Thomas got the last two outs of the fourth before Dutch Ruether and George Pipgras both tossed two scoreless innings.
Senators starter George Mogridge worked seven innings giving up five runs on nine hits, while walking three and fanning five.
Combs was involved in the Yankees grabbing an early advantage.
In the first, Combs walked and scored on a double by Babe Ruth. Combs tripled in the third and came home on a single by Mark Koenig.
The Senators knocked out Pennock with five runs in the top of the fourth.
Sam Rice and Goose Goslin both singled to begin the frame before Joe Judge smacked a three-run that gave the Senators the lead.
Mogridge added a RBI single and Harris walked with the bases loaded and it was 5-2. Thomas retired Rice and Goslin to shutdown the outburst.
The Yankees pick up a run n the bottom of the fourth as Combs singled to cut New York’s deficit to 5-3.
A two-run blast by New York’s Lou Gehrig in the seventh tied the affair to set the stage for Combs. It was the 38th homer of the season for Gehrig.
Urban Shocker (19-4) makes his final start of the season for the Yankees in the second contest of the three-game series, while the Senators counter with Tom Zachary.
