Tom Zachary may not have been overpowering, but he got the job done as the 1924 Washington Senators blanked the 1927 New York Yankees 2-0.

Zachary allowed just four hits in his complete game effort for the Senators with a pair of walks, while fanning Babe Ruth.

For the Yankees, Lou Gehrig singled in the second and Pat Collins added a single in the fifth.

New York’s biggest opportunity was in the sixth as Earle Combs led off with a single, but he was erased from the bases as Mark Koenig grounded into a double play.

After Ruth drilled a double and Gehrig followed with a walk, Tony Lazzeri popped out and the threat was over and the Yankees didn’t have a base runner the rest of the contest.

In the ninth, Zachary ended the affair by retiring Ruth, Gehrig and Lazzeri to close the door on the Yankees.

The Senators didn’t need a lot of offense as they faced New York starter Urban Shocker, who gave up seven hits with a strikeout in eighth innings. Wilcy Moore threw a scoreless ninth.

Washington’s first run came in the fourth as the Yankees tried to turn a double play as Joe Judge beat the relay throw to first.

A RBI double by Earl McNeely in the eighth produced the final tally for the Senators.

Waite Hoyt (18-8) heads to the mound for New York in the season finale, while Walter Johnson is scheduled to start for the Senators.
