Babe Ruth hammered his 61st home run of the season, while Waite Hoyt finished the year with a complete game victory as the 1927 New York Yankees posted a 2-1 win over the 1924 Washington Senators
The win gave the Yankees a 2-1 edge in the finale of a three-game set, while New York ended the season series against the Senators with a 15-7 margin.
Hoyt (19-8) gave up four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Washington produced its run in the second inning on a ground out by Roger Peckinpaugh.
Goose Goslin led off with a single and moved to third after Joe Judge doubled.
A ground out by Ossie Bluege didn’t get the job done, but Peckinpaugh succeeded and it was 1-0.
Senators starter Walter Johnson proved to be a difficult opponent for New York, but the Yankees were able to touch him up with a pair of homers in the fourth.
Johnson went seven frames allowing six hits with seven strikeouts.
Ruth tied the contest by smashing his solo shot. After Lou Gehrig was retired, Tony Lazzeri blasted his 27th homer of the year and the Yankees had all of the runs they would need.
