Waite Hoyt tossed his first shutout of the season as the 1927 New York Yankees defeated the 1924 Washington Senators 2-0.
Hoyt limited the Senators to six hits with four strikeouts as he worked out of jams in the second and sixth innings.
Washington’s Walter Johnson had some tough luck as he also went the distance and surrendered just five hits with nine strikeouts.
Lou Gehrig picked up the first hit for the Yankees in the fourth inning with a one-out double.
Bob Meusel also drilled a double that Goose Goslin couldn’t chase down that allowed Gehrig to score.
Babe Ruth walked to lead off the sixth inning. Johnson fanned Gehrig and Meusel before Tony Lazzeri singled to send Ruth to third.
Joe Dugan‘s RBI double gave the Yankees a 2-0 advantage.
The Senators rallied, but fell short in the bottom of the sixth as Earl McNeely and Bucky Harris both singled with two outs before Sam Rice hit a routine grounder to Lazzeri at second to end the opportunity.
The second contest of the four-game set features Herb Pennock on the mound for the Yankees, while George Mogridge gets the start for the Senators.
