The 1927 New York Yankees posted a 10-9 victory over the 1924 Washington Senators in a wild affair at Griffith Stadium.

The win marked the second time this season that the Yankees have won five straight games. New York has won 10 of its last 11.

New York trailed 5-1 heading into the top of the eighth inning when the Yankees exploded as Washington starter George Mogridge lost his control.

Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Bob Meusel all walked to begin the inning.

The explosion came when Firpo Marberry took over for Mogridge. Tony Lazzeri greeted the new hurler with a grand slam to tie the contest at 5-5.

Marberry survived the eighth, but he was removed by Washington manager Bucky Harris in the ninth after giving up a single to Mark Koenig and a double to Ruth.

The next call to the bullpen by Harris was to summon Allen Russell. An error by Ossie Bluege on a grounder by Gehrig allowed Koenig to score giving the Yankees a 6-5 lead.

Russell’s situation got worse as he surrendered a two-run triple to Meusel and a two-run homer to Joe Dugan.

Although the Yankees led 10-5 going into the bottom of the ninth, the Senators still had some life.

Dutch Reuther, who entered the contest in the fifth, gave up a single to Bluege. Reuther walked Roger Peckinpaugh and then allowed a RBI single by Muddy Ruel and it was 10-6.

Washington pinch-hitter Nemo Leibold drove in a run to make it 7-5 as he beat out a relay through as the Yankees attempted a double play.

At that point, New York manager Miller Huggins was looking for help from his bullpen. Myles Thomas was his choice to stop the rally.

Earl McNeely had a RBI triple and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Harris as the Senators trailed by a run.

There was still some doubt about the game’s result as Sam Rice reached on an error by Dugan and Goslin walked. Thomas was able to retire Joe Judge on a grounder to Gehrig to finally put an end to the uprising.

Senators Take Control

Washington jumped all over New York starter Herb Pennock, who would last just four innings.

In the first inning, Judge walked with the bases loaded and Bluege added a RBI single to make it 2-0.

With two outs in the second, Harris and Rice singled and both scored on back-to-back RBI singles by Goslin and Judge.

The Yankees got on the scoreboard in the fourth against Mogridge as the Washington pitcher gave up singles to Ruth, Gehrig and Meusel before walking Lazzeri with the bases loaded to make it 4-1.

A RBI double by Bluege in the fourth gave the Senators their 5-1 advantage that set the stage for the New York rallies in the final two frames.

The third contest of the four-game series will feature Urban Shocker on the mound for the Yankees, while the Senators give the ball to Tom Zachary.
