The frustration was building for the 1961 New York Yankees, but a pair of homers by Roger Maris made everyone in the visiting dugout happy to be a part of a 5-3 win over the 1924 Washington Senators.

New York stranded eight runners through the first three innings against Washington starter George Mogridge.

The first inning ended on a double play with the bases loaded, while in the third the Yankees loaded the bases with two outs only to have that rally stopped by a routine fly ball.

Everything changed in the fourth as the Yankees broke open the scoreless affair with four runs.

Bobby Richardson‘s RBI double with two outs gave the Yankees lead. Tony Kubek followed with a single before Maris drilled a three-run bomb, which led to a relieved New York dugout celebrated.

In the bottom fourth, the Senators came to life to make it 4-2 against New York starter Bill Stafford by scoring a pair of runs on a single by Ossie Bluege.

Maris hit a solo shot in the sixth off Allen Russell, who took over for Mogridge in the fourth. The ninth blast of the season for Maris marked the first time he has hit two long balls in the same game this year.

Washington answered in its half of the sixth as Goose Goslin homered, but that turned out to be the final tally for the Senators.

Stafford went the distance to earn the victory as he surrendered eight hits, while fanning six with just one walk.

Kubek led the Yankees with three hits, while Goslin and Earl McNeely had two hits each for the Senators.

Ralph Terry gets the ball for the Yankees in the third contest of the four-game series, while Tom Zachary starts for Washington.
