27 * 61 Replay 18: 27 Yankees at 24 Senators

Editor’s note: The 27 * 61 Yankees Replay games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will not be used for any games. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur.

The 1927 New York Yankees pounded out 21 hits on the way to a 16-0 victory over the 1924 Washington Senators at Griffith Stadium.

Bob Meusel led the barrage for the Yankees with six hits and six RBI with a pair of triples, a double and three singles.

With result of the game no longer in doubt, New York put an exclamation point on its sixth straight win as the Yankees scored nine times in the eighth inning by sending 14 batters to the plate.

Washington starter Tom Zachary struggled early as Babe Ruth set the tone with a two-run homer in the first inning. Ruth’s sixth shot of the season turned out to be the only homer in the game.

Joe Dugan added to New York’s lead in the third with a RBI single that produced an unearned run.

New York picked up three more runs in the fourth to build a 6-0 lead.

The Yankees scored another unearned run and Meusel knocked a pair of runs with a triple.

Zachary lasted six innings before being replaced by Paul Zahniser, who allowed another run earned run in the seventh.

Allen Russell took over for Zahniser and the Senators imploded as he allowed nine runs on seven hits with four walks with manager Bucky Harris deciding his hurler would take one for the team to save other pitchers.

Meusel got things started for the Yankees with a two-run triple to make it 9-0. Pat Collins and Earl Combs followed with RBI singles and it was 11-0.

Mark Koenig, Ruth and Lou Gehrig all walked with the bases loaded and it was 14-0. Meusel capped the onslaught with a two-run double..

Urban Shocker went the distance for the Yankees as he scattered nine hits with one strikeout.

In the finale of the four-game series, Wilcy Moore takes the mound for the Yankees as the Senators counter with John Martina.
