Mickey Mantle‘s sixth homer of the season was the difference as the 1961 New York Yankees beat the 1924 Washington Senators 5-3 in 11 innings.
With the scored tied at 3-3 heading into the 11th at Griffith Stadium, Washington’s Firpo Marberry retired Tony Kubek before he walked Roger Maris.
Mantle then made Marberry pay for a mistake pitch as the Yankee slugger blasted a two-run homer to give New York its final advantage.
Jim Coates earned the victory of the Yankees as he worked the last two frames and just allowed a single.
Howard Gives New York Lead
Elston Howard put the Yankees in front in the second with a RBI triple off Senators starter Tom Zachary, who worked nine innings giving up nine hits with four strikeouts.
In the fourth, Howard’s run-scoring single made it 2-0. Later in the frame, Clete Boyer added to New York’s margin as he knocked in a run with a single.
The Senators got to Yankees starter Ralph Terry in the fifth. Roger Peckinpaugh begin the rally with a one-out double. Muddy Reul singled to bring Peckinpaugh home and it was 3-1.
Joe Judge would eventually tie the affair with RBI singles in the sixth and the eighth off Terry. The last of Judge’s three hits sent Terry to the showers in the eighth. Luis Arroyo got the last out and then tossed a scoreless ninth to send the contest to extra innings.
Rollie Sheldon will be on the mound for New York in the finale of the four-game series in Washington. The Senators are expected to counter with John Martina.
