The 1924 Washington Senators salvaged the finale of a four-game series with a 3-0 victory over the 1961 New York Yankees in Griffith Stadium.

John Martina went the distance for the Senators allowing four hits with two of them by Tony Kubek. Yogi Berra added a single and Roger Maris a double. Martina walked one and fanned four.

New York starter Rollie Sheldon worked eight innings and matched Martina’s four-hit effort, but his problem was six walks that playeda role in both runs.

In the second inning, Sheldon issued free passes to Joe Judge, Ossie Bluege and Roger Peckinpaugh. After retiring Muddy Ruel, Sheldon gave up an infield single to Martina that put the Senators on top 1-0.

Washington’s other run came in the fifth as Sheldon walked Martina with one out and then gave up a single to Earl McNeely. Bucky Harris popped out and then Sam Rice walked. Goose Goslin coaxed a bases loaded walk to make it 2-0.

The Yankees threatened in the seventh. After Kubek singled and Mickey Mantle walked, Berra hit into a double play started by Martina that ended the opportunity.

Harris knocked in the final run of the contest for the Senators with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh.

The last gasp for the Yankees came in the ninth with two outs when Kubek singled and Maris doubled. Martina got Mantle to hit a harmless fly to left for the final out.

Bud Daley will start for the Yankees as they begin a three-game series against the 2005 Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Orlando Hernandez will be on the mound for the White Sox.
