Ken Holtzman was able to tame the bats of the 1927 New York Yankees as the Oakland lefty led the A’s to a 6-0 victory in the second contest of a three-game series.
Holtzman went the distance as he gave up just five hits with seven strikeouts to silence the crowd at Yankee Stadium.
Earle Combs and Babe Ruth both had two hits for New York, while Lou Gehrig had the other as the Yankees never had a serious opportunity to score after the first inning.
New York starter Herb Pennock matched Holtzman until the fifth inning.
Gene Tenace tripled to drive in a run and Ted Kubiak added a RBI single to give the A’s a 2-0 advantage.
In the sixth, the A’s ousted Pennock as Joe Rudi led off with a triple and then scored on a double by Reggie Jackson.
Myles Thomas took over on the mound and allowed a run-scoring to Sal Bando, which made it 4-0.
Oakland added its final runs in the ninth against Dutch Ruether as Rudi and George Hendrick had RBI singles.
The A’s will go for the series sweep as Blue Moon Odom gets the ball from manager Dick Williams against Urban Shocker, who gets the start for the Yankees.
