The Curse of the Bambino finally was over as Boston’s World Series drought ended with a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals as the Red Sox won for the first time since 1918.
The Fall Classic was really just a postscript after Boston won last three contests over the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series in seven games.
Boston won 98 games, but became the Wildcard entry into the post-season after the Yankees won the AL East title. The Red Sox swept the Anaheim Angels to reach the ALCS to face their demons.
Offensively, Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz both hit over 40 homers and drove in more than 130 runs to pace the Red Sox.
Curt Schilling led the AL with 21 victories as he finished second to Johan Santana of Minnesota for the Cy Young Award.
