Despite how well things may be going for an opponent during a game, success is just matter of time for the 1927 New York Yankees.
The case in point was a 2-1 victory for the Yankees over the 1970 Baltimore Orioles in Memorial Stadium.
Baltimore’s Jim Hardin had blanked the Yankees through five innings as the Orioles led 1-0.
However in the fifth, the Yankees left the bases loaded as Hardin induced Earle Combs to hit into a double play to end the inning.
With one out in the sixth, Hardin briefly suffered a lapse as he gave up a single to Babe Ruth with Lou Gehrig studying the Baltimore hurler from the on-deck circle.
The slugging New York first baseman figured something out as he blasted his 10th homer of the season, which was a two-run bomb off Hardin that put the Yankees on top 2-1.
That turned out to be all of the offense New York pitcher Wilcy Moore (5-0) would need as he tossed his fifth complete game in five starts.
Moore allowed four hits and just two of his five walks after the sixth inning to shut down the Orioles. In 45 innings this season, Moore has allowed just two runs for an ERA of 0.40.
Baltimore scored its run in the second inning.
Paul Blair walked and then swiped his first of two bases in the contest. Two batters later, Elrod Hendricks gave the Orioles the lead with a RBI single.
Bob Meusel and Tony Lazzeri had two hits each to lead the Yankees.
Hardin went seven innings giving up six hits with three strikeouts. Dick Hall tossed the final two frames allowing just one hit.
In the third affair of the four-game set, New York’s George Pipgras (2-0) is slated to start for the fifth time this season for the Yankees.
Baltimore manager Earl Weaver picked Tom Phoebus to take the mound for the Orioles.
