After a rough opening inning, Tom Phoebus got the job done for the 1970 Baltimore Orioles in a 7-3 victory over the 1927 New York Yankees at Memorial Stadium.

The Yankees scored three times in the top of the first against Phoebus, but that would be all he would allow in eight innings of work. He gave up eight hits and struck out two before giving way to Pete Richert in the ninth.

Earle Combs began the contest with a triple and Mark Koenig followed with a sacrifice fly. After Babe Ruth walked, Lou Gehrig tripled to make it 2-0. Gehrig scored what turned out to be the final tally for New York on a ground out by Bob Meusel.

Baltimore began its comeback in the second as Brooks Robinson smacked a two-run homer.

In the third, Phoebus had a RBI ground out to tie the affair before Mark Belanger gave the Orioles a 4-3 advantage with a run-scoring single.

Phoebus was able to get out of trouble in the eighth as New York left two runners on base before the Orioles put the game away in the bottom of the frame with three runs against Yankees starter George Pipgras.

Brooks Robinson’s sacrifice fly made it 5-3 and Merv Rettenmund capped the rally with a pinch-hit two-run single.

Pipgras (2-1) tossed seven innings and only gave up five hits with six strikeouts. However, it was the control issues that haunted Pipgras as he walked seven.

Waite Hoyt is scheduled to start for the Yankees in the series finale of the four-game set, while the Orioles counter with Jim Palmer.
