Urban Shocker remained unbeaten as he won his fifth game of the season for the 1927 New York Yankees with a 7-4 win over the 1968 Detroit Tigers.
Shocker went the distance allowing 11 hits with three walks and just one strikeout, but the Yankees offense provided enough cushion to get the win.
The Yankees had a fast start in the top of the first against Detroit’s Mickey Lolich, but the Tigers lefty bounced back quickly.
After giving up singles to Earle Combs and Mark Koenig to begin the contest, Lolich fanned Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Bob Meusel to end the threat.
In the bottom of the frame, the Tigers grabbed a 2-0 advantage on a two-run double by Jim Northrup.
The Yankees answered in the second as Tony Lazzeri‘s solo homer to cut New York’s deficit in half. Later in the inning, Koenig’s two-run single put the Yankees on top.
Lazzeri added another solo blast in the fifth as the Yankees led 4-2. Lolich didn’t make it out of the sixth as Combs blasted a homer and Ruth hit a two-run shot as the Yankees led 7-2. It was the 12th long ball of the season for Ruth.
Norm Cash ended the scoring in the affair with a two-run homer in the sixth.
Mickey Stanley led the Tigers with a game-high three hits.
New York is back on the road with a trip to Cleveland for a four-game series. Wilcy Moore gets the start for the Yankees, while the Indians counter with Sam Zoldak.
