Wilcy Moore remained unbeaten as the 1927 New York Yankees got past the 1948 Cleveland Indians 5-1 in Municipal Stadium.
Moore (6-0) went the distance giving up seven hits with four strikeouts to lower his ERA to 0.50 for the season.
Cleveland scored in the bottom of the first on a RBI single by Eddie Robinson, but Moore settled down after that frame.
The Yankees got on the scoreboard in the fourth against Indians starter Sam Zoldak.
After Babe Ruth struck out, Lou Gehrig walked and Bob Meusel singled before Tony Lazzeri brought them both home with a two-run double.
Mark Koenig added a run-scoring single in the fifth for the Yankees to make it 3-1.
Johnny Grabowski knocked in New York’s next run in the sixth and Lou Gehrig’s sacrifice fly in the seventh ended the scoring for the contest.
Zoldak worked seven innings for the Indians as he allowed 10 hits with a strikeout. Bob Muncrief finished the last two innings for Cleveland.
Earle Combs led the Yankees with three hits, while Meusel and Joe Dugan had two apiece. Lou Boudreau topped the Indians with a pair of hits.
In the second contest of the four-game set, George Pipgras gets the start for the Yankees, while Indians counter with Don Black.
