Gene Tenace drilled an 11th inning homer to give the 1972 Oakland A’s a 4-3 win over the 1927 New York Yankees.
The long ball had the A’s celebrating a sweep of the season-opening three-game series at Yankee Stadium.
Dutch Ruether, who entered the contest with one out in the ninth, suffered the loss as he surrendered the solo blast to Tenace with two outs.
Lou Gehrig got the scoring underway in the bottom of the second inning as he homered off A’s starter Blue Moon Odom.
Joe Rudi‘s RBI single off New York starter Urban Shocker in the third tied the contest at 1-1.
In the sixth, Mike Epstein smacked a two-run homer off Shocker that put the A’s on top 3-1.
The Yankees tied the affair at 3-3 in the seventh as they sent Odom to the showers after back-to-back RBI singles by Bob Meusel and Tony Lazzeri.
Darold Knowles got the final out of the seventh and tossed a scoreless eighth before A’s manager Dick Williams summoned Rollie Fingers from the bullpen.
Fingers blanked the Yankees over the last three frames on two hits to earn the victory.
Epstein and Tim Cullen led the A’s with three hits each, while Muesel topped the Yankees with three hits.
Next up for the Yankees is a three-game set at home against the 2004 Boston Red Sox.
