New York’s Ralph Terry tossed a three-hitter as the 1961 Yankees completed a three-game sweep of the 1972 Oakland A’s with a 2-0 victory.
Terry finished with seven strikeouts after setting the tone for the contest in Yankee Stadium by fanning Bert Campaneris, Joe Rudi and Reggie Jackson in the first inning.
Oakland didn’t get a hit until the sixth as Rudi and Jackson had back-to-back singles with two outs. Mike Epstein had the other hit for the A’s with a single in the seventh.
A’s starter Blue Moon Odom was just as good as Terry as he gave up four hits with four strikeouts in seven frames on the mound.
The game was scoreless in the bottom of the seventh when Odom walked Elston Howard with one out.
Perhaps frustrated with the free pass to the New York catcher, Odom made a mistake to Clete Boyer that resulted in a two-run homer that produced the only offense for the day.
The Yankees return to action at home against the 2004 Boston Red Sox. Rollie Sheldon gets the start for New York with Derek Lowe taking the ball from Boston manager Terry Francona.
