The string of 18 straight road games is finally over for the 1927 New York Yankees.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, the journey through five cities ended with a 3-2 loss in 12 innings to the 1924 Washington Senators in Griffith Stadium.
New York finished 11-7 on the trek with four losses in a row to close it out.
In the bottom of the 12th, Washington’s Ossie Bluege doubled to start the frame against New York reliever Dutch Ruether.
Ruether retired Roger Peckinpaugh and Muddy Ruel before Senators player/manager Bucky Harris selected Nemo Leibold to pinch-hit for pitcher Firpo Marberry.
Leibold smacked the walk-off single that brought home Bluege, who scored all three of Washington’s runs in the contest.
Marberry earned the victory for the Senators with two scoreless innings of work in relief of starter Tom Zachary. Zachary tossed 10 innings giving up seven hits with three strikeouts.
Ruether (2-2) was tagged with the loss after entering the affair for New York starter Urban Shocker, who went 11 innings allowing eight hits and three walks with just one strikeout.
Yankees Score First
New York grabbed a 2-0 advantage in the top of the third against Zachary, who lost earlier this season to the Yankees.
Shocker walked to begin the rally. Earle Combs followed with a RBI triple before he scored on a ground out by Mark Koenig.
The Senators picked up their first run in the seventh as Bluege scored from third when Ruel grounded into a double play.
After Joe Judge hit into a double play in the ninth, Shocker and the Yankees were one out away from a win.
A walk to Bluege kept the Senators alive. Peckinpaugh singled to move Bluege to third to bring up Ruel.
Shocker threw a pitch in the dirt that got by catcher Pat Collins allowing Bluege to race home making it 2-2.
On the next pitch, Ruel popped out to Collins as the game went into extra innings.
The two teams now head to Yankee Stadium for a four-game series.
George Pipgras (2-2) gets the start for New York, while John Martina takes the mound for the Senators.
