A rough stretch for the 1961 New York Yankees has come to an end.

The Yankees finished an 18-game road swing through five cities with a 5-1 loss to the 1924 Washington Senators at Griffith Stadium. The Yankees were 7-11 on the journey.

Washington’s Tom Zachary limited the Yankees to six hits as he went the distance for the victory. He had a pair of walks, but strikeout a New York batter.

New York’s run came in the ninth inning as Yogi Berra hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded before Zachary ended the rally.

Berra, Tony Kubek and Elston Howard each had two hits for the Yankees.

The Senators put three runs on the scoreboard in the first inning against New York starter Ralph Terry (3-2), who would work seven innings giving up five hits with two strikeouts.

Sam Rice drove in the first run with a triple before Goose Goslin‘s two-run homer made it 3-0.

Jim Coates took over for Terry in the eighth. He was a victim of the Yankees defense that made two of their season-high six errors, which led to a pair of unearned runs.

Ossie Bluege drilled a two-run single that put the Senators up 5-0.

The two squads return to action at Yankee Stadium for a four-game series.

Rollie Sheldon (1-4) will start for New York as John Martina gets the ball for the Senators.
