After 18 straight games on the road, the 1927 New York Yankees came to life at home with a 7-1 win over the 1924 Washington Senators.
George Pipgras (3-2) went the distance on the mound for the Yankees allowing six hits with six strikeouts.
Pipgras didn’t give up a run to the Senators until the seventh on a RBI triple by Earl McNeely.
The Yankees got started early with a RBI single by Bob Meusel off Washington’s John Martina.
In the second, the Yankees added two more runs on a RBI single by Earle Combs and a sacrifice fly by Mark Koenig.
Lou Gehrig blasted a two-run homer in the fourth, which was his 12th long ball of the season.
Koenig finished the scoring for the Yankees in the eighth with a two-run single.
Martina left after four innings and giving up six hits and five runs. Allen Russell tossed two scoreless innings for the Senators, while Paul Zahniser worked the final two frames.
Dutch Ruether (2-2) makes his first start of the season for New York in the second contest of the four-game series, while Washington counters with Curly Ogden.
