The 1927 New York Yankees may have had a lot of help in a 10-2 victory over the 1924 Washington Senators, but it wasn’t needed.

The tone was established in the bottom of the first as the Yankees were handed a 2-0 advantage without a hit against Washington starter Curly Ogden.

Ogden walked Earle Combs, Mark Koenig, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig to produce the first run, while the second came home as Bob Meusel hit into a double play.

Muddy Ruel‘s RBI single gave the Senators a run in the top of the second against New York’s Dutch Ruether, who was making his first start of the season.

New York’s first hit was in the second inning when Pat Collins blasted his second homer of the season to make it 3-1.

The Yankees added two more runs in the fourth when Ruether had a RBI double before Combs drove in the final tally with a single.

Tony Lazzeri made it 6-1 with a run scoring double in the fifth that ended the day for Ogden, who gave up six runs on seven hits with six walks.

Goose Goslin knocked in Washington’s second run with a single in the seventh.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gehrig drilled a two-run homer off Paul Zahniser after Ruth singled to begin the frame. It was the 13th long ball of the season for Gehrig, who has knocked in 32 runs in 35 contests.

Allen Russell took over for Zahniser and experienced the control problems as Ogden did with four walks. He issued free passes to Ruth and Gehrig with the bases loaded for New York’s final runs in the eighth.

Ruether (3-2) went the distance for the Yankees to get the win. He gave up 11 hits, but was able to work out of several threats by the Senators as they stranded 12 runners.

In the third contest of the four-game series, the Yankees send Waite Hoyt (3-3) to the mound as Walter Johnson will start for the Senators.
