27 * 61 Replay 35: 24 Senators at 61 Yankees

Bud Daley had his top pitching performance of the season so far as he led the 1961 New York Yankees to a 3-1 victory over the 1924 Washington Senators.

After Daley gave up a sacrifice fly to Bucky Harris in the top of the third that put the Senators on top 1-0, the New York lefty retired the next 19 hitters as the Yankees responded with enough offense to get the job done.

Overall in his complete game outing, Daley (3-2) gave up three hits and fanned six without walking a batter.

Goose Goslin had a double in the second for Washington, while Senators starting pitcher Curly Ogden added a double in third before before Earl McNeely followed with a single that set up Harris.

A RBI single by Elston Howard tied the contest in the fourth against Ogden, who also went the distance for the Senators.

Hitting in the leadoff spot for the first time this season, Tony Kubek‘s run-scoring double in the fifth gave the Yankees a 2-1 advantage.

Mickey Mantle led off the sixth with his 11th homer of the season, which was also his 25th RBI. He is second on the squad in both categories behind Roger Maris, who has 16 long balls and 27 RBI.

The win was the second straight for the Yankees as they inched closer to the .500 mark at 17-18.

A pair of aces will be on the mound of the third affair of the four-game series. Whitey Ford (3-2) starts for the Yankees, while the Senators counter with Walter Johnson.
