A manufactured run proved to be the difference for the 1924 Washington Senators in a 4-3 win over the 1927 New York Yankees.
With the score tied heading into the ninth, New York manager Miller Huggins turned to Myles Thomas to replace starter Waite Hoyt.
Muddy Ruel singled to begin the game-winning rally. Washington starter Walter Johnson sacrificed him to second with a bunt back to Thomas.
New York catcher Pat Collins helped the Senators cause by dropping pop up off the bat of Nemo Leibold, who had entered the contest for an injured Earl McNeely in the fifth.
Washington player-manager Bucky Harris followed a sacrifice fly to bring home Ruel with the winning run.
The Senators scored the first run of the affair in the second inning when Roger Peckinpaugh raced home when Johnson grounded into a double play.
In the third, Washington added to its advantage as a RBI double by Sam Rice made it 2-0.
New York tied the contest in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Joe Dugan and a run-scoring single by Collins.
Ossie Bluege put the Senators back on top with a single in the eighth that drove in a run to make it 3-2.
Johnson appeared to be on his way to the win, but pinch-hitter Ben Paschal blasted a two-out solo homer in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game again.
Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Bob Meusel were all retired in the ninth by Johnson as he finished the contest for the win. He allowed five hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts.
Hoyt tossed eight frames giving up five hits with a pair of strikeouts. It was five walks that got Hoyt in trouble at times before Thomas (2-3) took over and got the loss in the ninth.
The Yankees will have Herb Pennock (1-3) on the mound in the finale of the four-game series, while George Mogridge starts for the Senators.
