The 1924 Washington Senators earned a split in a four-game series against the 1927 New York Yankees with a 3-1 victory in the finale.
With the game scoreless until the top of the eighth, the Senators were able to produce a run against New York starter Herb Pennock.
Washington player-manager Bucky Harris walked to start the rally. Sam Rice doubled before Pennock retired Goose Goslin on a pop out to New York second baseman Tony Lazzeri.
Joe Judge lifted a fly ball to Babe Ruth in right field that was deep enough for a sacrifice fly as Harris raced home to make it 1-0.
Pennock wouldn’t make it out of the ninth as he was charged with the final two Washington runs. Senators starting pitcher George Mogridge hit a sacrifice fly and Earl McNeely added a RBI single.
Pennock (1-4) has lost his last three starts with each being decided by two runs or less. Wilcy Moore was called from the bullpen to get the final two outs.
Mogridge would go the distance for Washington allowing five hits with five strikeouts.
The Yankees would score in the bottom of the ninth on doubles by Bob Meusel and Joe Dugan.
