The 1927 New York Yankees broke open a close game by batting around in the fifth inning on the way to an 11-5 victory over the 2004 Boston Red Sox.
Boston’s David Ortiz smacked a solo homer in the second inning off Urban Shocker.
The Yankees responded against Boston starter Tim Wakefield with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second as Lou Gehrig hit a solo homer and Pat Collins added a two-run double to make it 2-1.
Wakefield’s day came to an end in the fifth as the Yankees sent nine batters to the plate adding five runs on six hits.
New York’s big guns came through with two outs in the frame as Babe Ruth started the scoring with a three-run homer, which was his 13th of the season.
After Gehrig doubled, Bob Meusel drilled a two-run shot that put the Yankees ahead 7-1 to send the Red Sox starter to the showers.
Both teams added runs in the sixth. Ortiz had a RBI single, while Shocker stunned Boston reliever Terry Adams with a solo homer to make it 8-2.
Johnny Damon drove in a run for the Red Sox in the seventh before Gehrig smacked a two-run homer for his 15th long ball of the season and it was 10-3.
New York’s last run came in the ninth against Mike Myers as Earle Combs had a RBI single.
With a big lead and Shocker looking for a complete game, the Red Sox were able to score twice in the bottom of the ninth.
Damon picked up a RBI on a fielder’s choice as Shocker tried to end the game with a double play, but the Boston outfielder beat the relay throw from shortstop Mark Koenig. Orlando Cabrera drove in the last tally with a double.
Shocker (6-0) gave up 12 hits with four strikeouts to tied teammate Wilcy Moore for the team lead in victories.
The Yankees travel to California for a five-game series against the 1972 Oakland A’s.
Moore (6-0) gets the start for the Yankees, while the A’s counter with Ken Holtzman.
