27 * 61 Replay 39: 27 Yankees at 72 A’s

Wilcy Moore continues to be the most dominant pitcher for the 1927 New York Yankees as he blanked the 1972 Oakland A’s 4-0.

Moore (7-0) has won all seven of his starts this season with complete games, while allowing just three runs for an ERA of 0.41. He also has a pair of scoreless relief appearances.

Against the A’s, Moore allowed five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in the opener of the five-game series in Oakland.

Bob Meusel was the offensive force for the Yankees against A’s starter Ken Holtzman, who tossed eight innings and gave up nine hits and all four runs.

In the fourth, Meusel had a two-run triple to give the Yankees the lead. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Tony Lazzeri and the advantage was 3-0.

A RBI double by Meusel in the eight accounted for the final tally of the afffair. Bob Locker worked a scoreless ninth for Oakland.

Lou Gehrig and Pat Collins had two hits apiece for the Yankees.

Oakland’s hits were by Mike Epstein with a double in second, Holtzman and Bert Campaneris each had singles in the third, while Reggie Jackson and Gene Tenace both singled in the ninth.

Myles Thomas (2-2) is set to make his first start of the season in the second contest of the series, while Blue Moon Odom takes the mound for the A’s.
