After being swept in a three-game season-opening series by the 1972 Oakland A’s, the 1927 New York Yankees finally have a victory.
Wilcy Moore tossed a five-hit shutout as New York blanked the 2004 Boston Red Sox 6-0 at Yankee Stadium.
Moore surrendered back-to-back singles to begin the game to Johnny Damon and Orlando Cabrera, but a double play would end the threat.
After Damon singled in the third, Boston’s other two hits came on singles by Jason Varitek and Trot Nixon with one out. Moore retired Mark Bellhorn on a pop out before he fanned Bill Mueller for his fifth and final strikeout of the contest.
New York got all of the runs Moore would need in the third as the Yankees scored four times against Red Sox starter Derek Lowe.
Bob Meusel had a RBI single, while Tony Lazzeri added another run with a ground out. Joe Dugan‘s two-run double made it 4-0.
Lowe was knocked out of the game in the fourth as the Yankees picked up their final two runs.
Mark Koenig, who topped the Yankees with four hits, had a single to begin the frame. Koenig later scored on an error by Boston’s Manny Ramierez in left as he misplayed a shot off the bat of Lou Gehrig, which sent Lowe to the showers.
Meusel’s run-scoring single off Alan Embree put the Yankees on top by six.
George Pipgras is set to start the second affair of the four-game series for the Yankees, while the Red Sox will counter with Bronson Arroyo.
