George Pipgras tossed a two-hitter as he led the 1927 New York Yankees to a 5-0 victory over the 1972 Oakland A’s.
Despite five walks, Pipgras (4-2) fanned five and allowed singles to Mike Epstein in the second and Joe Rudi in the eighth.
The Yankees got on the scoreboard in the second inning against A’s starter Dave Hamilton.
Bob Meusel singled and Tony Lazzeri was retired on a fly ball before Joe Dugan walked.
Pat Collins had a RBI double that brought home Meusel and sent Dugan to third. A passed ball charged to Gene Tenace gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Earle Combs led off with a triple off Hamilton and then Babe Ruth doubled to make it 3-0.
Hamilton got in trouble in the seventh thanks to an error and walk to Ruth. Lou Gehrig doubled and it was 4-0. Meusel ended Hamiliton’s day with a run-scoring single.
Darold Knowles and Bob Locker held the Yankees scoreless the rest of the way, but the A’s couldn’t muster a rally against Pipgras.
Waite Hoyt (3-3) starts for the Yankees in the finale of the five-game series with the A’s going with Catfish Hunter.
