Bud Daley tossed a five-hitter for the 1961 New York Yankees en route to a 3-1 victory over the 1972 Oakland A’s.
Daley (3-3) went the distance allowing the run in the second inning when Ted Kubiak had a RBI single, which was his first of two hits. Daley recorded five strikeouts with a pair of walks.
Dave Hamilton dominated the Yankees early in the contest as he retired the first 12 batters.
Hamilton’s prowess ended in the top of the fifth when Mickey Mantle drilled his 12th homer of the season to tie the affair at 1-1.
The Yankees got to Hamilton again in the seventh with two runs with one being unearned.
Bill Skowron put New York on top with a run-scoring single. After Tony Kubek reached on an error that loaded the bases, Clete Boyer had an infield single that produced the unearned tally.
Elston Howard topped the Yankees with two hits, which led to him scoring the go-ahead run in the seventh.
Hamilton went seven frames and gave up seven hits with two strikeouts.
Whitey Ford (4-2) will start for New York as the Yankees close out a five-game series in Oakland as the A’s go with Catfish Hunter.
