Waite Hoyt tossed a one-hitter for the 1927 New York Yankees as he led his team to a 6-0 victory over the 1972 Oakland A’s.
The win was the second straight for the Yankees as they won four of the five contests in the series.
New York got off to a fast start against Oakland’s Catfish Hunter with three runs in the top of the first.
Hunter fanned Lou Gehrig with the bases loaded, but Bob Meusel hit a sacrifice fly to put the Yankees on top.
Tony Lazzeri and Joe Dugan followed with back-to-back RBI singles and it was 3-0.
Hoyt (4-3) had allowed two walked before he surrendered a single in the fifth to Angel Mangual for Oakland’s only hit.
After working eight innings, Rollie Fingers took the mound in the ninth. Fingers struck out Mark Koenig and Babe Ruth before Gehrig and Meusel had RBI doubles. The final tally for the Yankees came on a run-scoring single by Lazzeri.
New York returns home to entertain the 1968 Detroit Tigers in the opener of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium. Herb Pennock (1-4) gets the start for the Yankees, while the Tigers counter with Earl Wilson.
