The 2005 Chicago White Sox opened a four-game series against the 1927 New York Yankees with a 7-3 victory.

White Sox starter Orlando Hernandez allowed three hits over seven innings to earn the win, while Neal Cotts was perfect over the last two frames to earn a save.

Neither team had a hit until Chicago’s Juan Uribe led off the third with a double against New York starter George Pipgras. Hernandez moved Uribe to third with a sacrifice bunt, which led to the first run of the contest as Scott Podsednik grounded out to make it 1-0.

The score remained the same until a pair of homers by Chicago gave the White Sox a 4-0 advantage. Jermaine Dye began the rally with a solo homer, while Joe Crede added a two-run blast to end the day for Pipgras (4-3).

Chicago added another run in the seventh off Yankees reliever Dutch Ruether RBI single by Paul Konerko.

Hernandez finally got tired in the bottom of the seventh as he gave up Babe Ruth‘s 17th homer of the season.

After a pair of walks to Tony Lazzeri and Bob Muesel, Joe Dugan hit a ground ball to Uribe at short and the error allowed Lazzeri to score. Pat Collins had a sacrifice fly that brought home the second unearned tally of the inning.

Myles Thomas tossed the final two innings for the Yankees. Thomas gave up a pinch-hit homer to Carl Everett in the eighth and run-scoring single to Aaron Rowand in the ninth.

New York will have Waite Hoyt (4-3) on the mound for game two of the series, while the White Sox counter with Mark Buehrle.
