Tony Lazzeri changed the momentum with a homer as the 1927 New York Yankees defeated the 2005 Chicago White Sox 4-2 in the second contest of a four-game series.
The Yankees trailed 2-1 heading into the fourth inning as Lou Gehrig reached on an error by Chicago catcher A.J. Pierzynski to set up Lazzeri to face White Sox starter Mark Buehrle, who worked eight innings.
Lazzeri’s sixth long ball of the season gave the Yankees a 3-2 advantage they would hold on to the rest of the way. Lazzeri has driven in 27 runs this season.
Waite Hoyt (5-3) went the distance for the Yankees allowing nine hits with seven strikeouts.
Gehrig’s RBI single in the first frame that put the Yankees on top, but the lead didn’t last as Pierzynski smacked a two-homer in the second that gave the White Sox the lead.
New York’s final tally came in the eight as Babe Ruth hit a solo shot, which was his team-high 18th homer of the season.
In game three of the series, the Yankees will have Herb Pennock (1-5) on the mound, while the White Sox will counter with Freddy Garcia.
