Whitey Ford tossed a four-hitter and got some defensive help late as the 1961 New York Yankees won 3-1 over the 2005 Chicago White Sox in the second contest of a four-game series.
Ford (6-2) went all the way for the Yankees with eight strikeouts allowing just a solo homer to Paul Konerko in the top of the second inning.
Elston Howard tied the affair in the third with two outs on a RBI single off Chicago starter Mark Buehrle.
In the sixth, Yogi Berra drilled a solo blast, which was his ninth homer of the season.
Buehrle was lifted after seven frames for a pinch-hitter. He gave up eight hits with four strikeouts.
The Yankees touched up Bobby Jenks for a run in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI single by Berra.
The White Sox had a baserunner in the eighth and ninth, but Ford was able to coax double plays to stay away from trouble.
New York has Bill Stafford (7-2) scheduled to be on the mound in game three of the series. Freddy Garcia starts for the White Sox.
