With a 4-3 victory over the 2004 Boston Red Sox in 11 innings at Yankee Stadium, New York now has two straight wins.
Alan Embree was on the mound for the Red Sox as the Yankees began the bottom of the 11th frame with singles by Joe Dugan and Pat Collins.
Red Sox manager Terry Francona called closer Keith Foulke from the bullpen to stop the rally.
New York pitcher Myles Thomas executed a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. Combs followed with a single that brought home Dugan with the winning run.
Thomas got the win for New York as he tossed his second scoreless frame in the top of the 11th.
The Yankees scored first on the opening inning against Boston starter Bronson Arroyo, who would leave the contest after batting in the top of the third.
With one out, Mark Koenig tripled and then scored as Arroyo got Babe Ruth to ground out.
Yankees starter George Pipgras didn’t allow a Boston hit until the fifth when Bill Mueller doubled. He later scored on another double by Trot Nixon that tied the affair at 1-1.
Mueller gave the Red Sox a 2-1 advantage in the sixth with a RBI single.
Boston’s lead didn’t last as Lou Gehrig‘s two-run homer for the Yankees in the bottom of the sixth off Terry Adams, which made it 3-2.
Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek ended the game for Pipgras as he tied it in the eighth to a run-scoring double to set the stage for extra innings.
