Waite Hoyt and Babe Ruth earned their keep as the 1927 New York Yankees defeated the 1948 Cleveland Indians 2-0 in the finale of a three-game series as the Yankees came away with a pair of wins.
Hoyt (6-3) tossed a six-hitter as he posted a complete game victory for the third straight start. He had seven strikeouts and walked two. It was his third shutout of the season.
The only serious threat against Hoyt came in the first inning, which he ended with the bases loaded by fanning Larry Doby.
Ruth provided the offense with a two-run homer in the third inning right after Mark Koenig doubled. It was the team-high 22nd homer for Ruth, who also tops the Yankees with 53 RBI. He also had a single in the sixth.
Cleveland starting pitcher Bob Lemon also went the distance giving up five hits with four strikeouts and a walk.
In addition to Ruth and Koenig, Earle Combs and Joe Dugan had hits for the Yankees.
Lou Boudreau and Ken Keltner both had two hits for the Indians, while Allie Clark and Jim Hegan each had one.
Next up for New York is a three-game series against the 1970 Baltimore Orioles in Yankee Stadium. Herb Pennock (2-5) gets the start in the opener, while the Orioles manager Earl Weaver counters with Mike Cuellar.
