Mickey Mantle smashed a pair of homers to lead the 1961 New York Yankees to a 4-2 victory over the 1970 Baltimore Orioles.
Paul Blair opened the scoring in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer off New York starter Ralph Terry to give the Orioles an early advantage.
Baltimore’s lead didn’t last very long as Mantle’s two-run bomb off Orioles starter Dave McNally in the bottom of the fourth tied the affair at 2-2.
In the sixth, a solo shot by Mantle gave the Yankees the lead for good. With his 21 long ball of the season, Mantle now trails Roger Maris by for for the team lead.
Tony Kubek ended the scoring for the Yankees with a homer in the eighth.
Terry (4-4) evened his season record for New York as he left the mound with two outs in the top of the eighth after giving up six hits with five strikeouts. Luis Arroyo gave up a hit as he got the last four outs to pick up his seventh save of the season.
McNally went the distance for the Orioles allowing eight hits as he fanned five.
Rollie Sheldon gets the ball in the finale of the three-game series for the Yankees, while the Orioles counter with Jim Hardin.
