The 1970 Baltimore Orioles salvaged the finale of a three-game series the 1961 New York Yankees with a 5-1 victory.

Jim Hardin tossed a complete game and Boog Powell bashed a pair of homers help the cause for the Orioles.

Hardin gave up six hits with two walks, while striking out four on his way to the win.

In the top of the first, Paul Blair reached on an error by New York shortstop Tony Kubek. After Blair stole second, New York starter Rollie Sheldon retired Mark Belanger and Frank Robinson, but Powell was a different story. Powell drilled a two-run bomb that put the Orioles in front.

The Yankees were able to answer in the bottom of the inning as they would score their only run as Roger Maris had a solo shot for his 23rd homer of the season.

Frank Robinson added to Baltimore’s lead in the third as he led off the frame with a solo blast.

Baltimore’s last two runs came in the eighth and ninth. Blair had a RBI double, while Powell capped the day with his second homer of the contest.

Sheldon (3-7) left the mound for the Yankees with one out in the eighth after giving up four runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Jim Coates tossed the rest of the eighth, while Tex Clevenger worked the ninth.

The Yankees travel to Fenway Park to face the 2004 Boston Red Sox for a five-game series. Bud Daley (3-4) is scheduled to start the opener for New York, while Boston counters with Bronson Arroyo.
