Bronson Arroyo made sure he would stick around this time.

Arroyo tossed a complete game as the 2004 Boston Red Sox defeated the 1927 New York Yankees 5-1 at Fenway Park.

Earlier this season against New York in Yankee Stadium, Arroyo was injured running to first on a ground ball in the top of the third inning. Arroyo gave up a run and a pair hits in two innings as the Red Sox would go on to lose 4-3 in 11 frames.

In going the distance, Arroyo allowed six hits with 11 strikeouts.

The Boston right-hander fanned Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig twice. He also struck out four straight by getting Mark Koenig, Ruth and Gehrig in the fifth, which was followed by Tony Lazzeri leading off the sixth.

Boston’s offense took advantage of miscues by Koenig. The New York shortstop had four errors on the day with the first two leading to runs for the Red Sox.

In the first, Johnny Damon reached on an error and then scored from first on a double by Orlando Cabrera. Cabrera came home on a single by Manny Ramirez and it was 2-0.

The Yankees picked up their only tally in the second as starting pitcher George Pipgras was able to drive in a run with an infield single.

Jason Varitek led off the fourth with a grounder to Koenig, who threw the ball past Gehrig at first allowing the Boston catcher to reach second. Mark Bellhorn would knock Varitek home with a double, while Damon capped the rally with a RBI single to make it 4-1.

A run-scoring double in the seventh by David Ortiz provided Boston with its final score. The play also sent Pipgras to the showers after he gave up nine hits before leaving without getting an out in the seventh. Myles Thomas was able to hold Boston scoreless over his two frames.

The second affair of the five-game set in Fenway features Waite Hoyt (6-3) starting on the mound for New York, while Curt Schilling gets the ball for the Red Sox.
