27 * 61 Replay 6: 04 Red Sox at 27 Yankees

Editor’s note: The 27 * 61 Yankees Replay games are being played with Strat-o-Matic cards and dice. The designated hitter will not be used for any games. Injuries will only be used during the game when they occur.

Curt Schilling was able to make into the ninth inning as he helped the 2004 Boston Red Sox defeat the 1927 New York Yankees 4-2.

Schilling left the Yankee Stadium mound after giving up a single to Bob Meusel to lead off the ninth. He surrendered seven hits, while striking out six.

Keith Foulke got Tony Lazzeri to ground into a double play to take care of Meusel. The Red Sox closer retired Joe Dugan on a grounder to end the contest and pick up a save.

The Red Sox jumped on New York starter Waite Hoyt in the first inning.

Manny Ramirez singled with two outs before David Ortiz smacked a long two-run homer to give Boston the lead.

The Yankees scored in the on a sacrifice fly by Lou Gehrig. Earle Combs led off with a single. Babe Ruth doubled one out later sending Combs to third enabling him to score on the fly ball to Ramirez in left field.

Boston added two more runs in the fifth against Hoyt as Bill Mueller, Trot Nixon and Mark Bellhorn all singled to start the rally.

Johnny Damon‘s sacrifice fly brought home the first run. Orlando Cabrera followed with a RBI single to make it 4-1.

Ruth’s first homer of the season ended the scoring for the day in the sixth frame.

Herb Pennock gets the start for the Yankees in the finale of the four-game series, while the Red Sox counter with Pedro Martinez.
