The 2004 Boston Red Sox broke open a tight game during the 13th inning with six runs in an 8-2 victory over the 1961 New York Yankees.
With the loss in Yankee Stadium, New York fell for the first time this season.
Jim Coates was in his third frame on the mound for the Yankees in relief of starter Whitey Ford, who tossed 10 innings and gave up two runs on eight hits with eight strikeouts.
After fanning Manny Ramirez to begin the 13th, Coates walked David Ortiz. Coates struck out Jason Varitek, but then issued a free pass to Kevin Youkilis.
From that point, the proverbial wheels came off the vehicle for Coates. Trot Nixon singled to break the tie and pinch-hitter Kevin Millar added another RBI single and it was 4-2.
Coates walked Pokey Reese to load the bases and he was done for the day.
Yankees manager Ralph Houk summoned Tex Clevenger from the bullpen and the situation got worse.
Johnny Damon doubled to clear the bases as the Red Sox went on top 7-2. Orlando Cabrera ended the rally with a RBI double as the Red Sox would send 10 hitters to the plate.
Keith Foulke worked a scoreless bottom of the 13th, but couldn’t record a save because of the offensive outburst by his teammates.
Ramiro Mendoza, who allowed just one hit, threw the 11th and 12th to earn the victory for Boston.
The Yankees grabbed an early lead in the contest thanks to Tony Kubek.
Kubek homered off Red Sox starter Curt Schilling in the first inning. Kubek tripled and scored in the third on a Mickey Mantle ground out.
Damon cut Boston’s deficit in half as he beat out an infield single with the bases loaded in the fifth to make it 2-1.
In the seventh, the Red Sox were able to tie the game by manufacturing a run against Ford.
Nixon singled and Mark Bellhorn walked. Schilling was able to execute a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third. Damon followed with a ground out that brought Nixon home to make it 2-2.
Schilling worked 10 innings and gave up 10 of New York’s 12 hits, but also had 13 strikeouts to keep the affair close.
Bill Stafford will get the start for the Yankees in the finale of the four-game series with the Red Sox. Boston’s Pedro Martinez takes the mound for Red Sox manager Terry Francona.
