The lineup of 1927 New York Yankees is filled with sluggers.
Bob Meusel was the star power hitter for New York with a walk-off blast as the Yankees beat the 1972 Oakland A’s 5-4.
Meusel’s solo shot off A’s reliever Bob Locker was his fifth of the season, while also being the fifth of the contest for the Yankees.
George Pipgras (5-4) went the distance to get the win for New York allowing 10 hits to go with nine strikeouts.
A’s starter Dave Hamilton went six frames giving up four run on seven hits with two strikeouts. Darold Knowles tossed a scoreless seventh before Locker took over in the eighth.
Oakland scored in the first when Bert Campaneris singled and stole second. The speedy shortstop later scored on a double by Reggie Jackson.
Campaneris was at it again in the top of the third. He reached on a fielder’s choice and then swiped second.
Unfortunately for the A’s, when Rudi singled to left field Campaneris was thrown out trying to score by Meusel as New York catcher Pat Collins applied the tag to end the inning.
In the bottom of the third, Babe Ruth hit a solo homer to tie the contest. Ruth now leads the Yankees with 26 homers and 60 RBI.
One inning later, it was Tony Lazzeri drilling a long ball to give the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
The A’s tied it at 2-2 in the fifth. This time after Campaneris singled, he picked up his third stolen base and would score from second on a single by Rudi.
It didn’t take long for the Yankees to respond as Lou Gehrig and Lazzeri hit back-to-back homers in the sixth to make it 4-2. Gehrig’s homer total this season is now at 21, while Lazzeri has 13.
Rudi answered the call in the seventh as he added a two-run homer to his day to tie the contest at 4-4 setting the stage for his New York left field counterpart.
Waite Hoyt (7-3) is slated to get the ball in the fourth affair of the six-game series with the A’s starter scheduled to be Catfish Hunter.
