A homer by Joe Rudi was all the 1972 Oakland A’s really needed as they went on to a 4-1 victory over the 1961 New York Yankees.
After Bert Campaneris singled and stole second leading off the game, Rudi smacked a pitch from Bud Daley over the fence and the A’s led 2-0.
Roger Maris drilled his 25th homer of the season in the bottom of the first and the blast turned out to be the only offense the Yankees could muster against A’s starter Dave Hamilton.
Hamilton left after Maris singled leading off the ninth as he limited the Yankees to five hits in the affair with five strikeouts.
Rollie Fingers earned a save as he retired Mickey Mantle, Elston Howard and Yogi Berra to close out the win for Oakland.
Daley (5-5) left with one out in the eighth as he surrendered a run-scoring single to Campaneris. Jim Coates got the final two outs, but he also gave up a RBI single to Reggie Jackson with the run charged to Daley.
Luis Arroyo tossed a scoreless ninth to finish off the work for the New York pitchers.
Whitey Ford (6-4) will start for New York in the fourth contest of the six-game series with Oakland as the A’s send Catfish Hunter to the mound.
