Waite Hoyt tossed a four-hitter to lead the 1927 New York Yankees to a 3-0 victory over the 1972 Oakland A’s.

Hoyt (8-3) lowered his ERA to 2.71 as he won his fifth straight complete game. He fanned five and walked just one batter.

The only serious threat the A’s were able to mount against Hoyt was in the seventh.

With one out, Reggie Jackson walked and then Sal Bando reached second on a throwing error by New York shortstop Mark Koenig.

Hoyt responded by getting Mike Epstein on a grounder that Koenig snagged followed by a strike out of Angel Mangual ending the opportunity for the A’s.

The Yankees picked up two runs in the second inning on a RBI double by Joe Dugan and a triple Johnny Grabowski that made it 2-0.

Babe Ruth hammered his team-high 27th homer of the season leading off the third against A’s starter Catfish Hunter, who went seven innings giving up just four hits with five walks and five strikeouts.

Darold Knowles worked a scoreless eighth for Oakland, while just walking a batter.

New York’s Herb Pennock (4-5) starts the fifth contest of the six-game series with Oakland as the A’s counter with Ken Holtzman.
