Pedro Martinez tossed a three-hitter to lead the 2004 Boston Red Sox to a 4-1 victory over the 1961 New York Yankees.

Martinez was fueled by the rowdy Yankee Stadium crowd in his complete game effort as he fanned 13. Boston’s win earned the Red Sox a split in the four-game set.

The offense came early for the Red Sox against New York starter Bill Stafford, who was effective through his eight innings of work allowing eight hits with eight strikeouts.

Orlando Cabrera got it going for Boston in the first inning with a one-out double. After Stafford retired Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz blasted a two-run homer to put Boston on top 2-0.

Martinez gave up a single to Roger Maris in the bottom of the first, but he was left stranded.

In the second, Martinez made his one mistake on the day as he surrendered a solo homer to Bill Skowron.

The score remained the same until the ninth as Martinez and Stafford blanked their opponents.

Martinez gave up a single to Clete Boyer in the fifth, while Stafford struck out Ortiz with the bases loaded to end the sixth.

New York manager Ralph Houk called on Luis Arroyo to take the mound in the ninth.

Cabrera’s two-run double provided the final score of the contest.

The Yankees will make their first road trip of the season as they travel to meet the 1972 Oakland A’s for a three-game series.

Ralph Terry is slated to start for New York, while Oakland counters with Blue Moon Odom.
